The Wall Street Journal: Justin Bieber says half his face is paralyzed due to Ramsay Hunt syndrome, cancels shows

Justin Bieber said Friday he has Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which is caused by a virus that can attack nerves and lead to facial paralysis. He has postponed a slate of concerts.

In a video he posted on Instagram, Bieber, 28 years old, said that the syndrome had paralyzed half his face so that he couldn’t blink one eye, smile with his half mouth or move a nostril.

“This is pretty serious,” he said, as he demonstrated how he couldn’t move half his face.

He didn’t say when his symptoms started.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a rare compilation of a virus known as varicella-zoster, according to researchers. The virus can attack facial nerves.
